Comments: Uhm. Confession: I met someone and she loves Mariah Carey so here I am listening to her whole discography and guess what? I really like it. It’s not like I was unaware of Mariah or unfamiliar with her biggest hits, but I’ve never dug through any of her albums before. She was (maybe still is?) legit. Her first five albums are all really good with basically zero misses. I’ve been less enamored with her post-Butterfly projects as her sound feels more and more top 100 poppy to me. I prefer Mariah when she’s singing singing. But still, some of the later projects are still growing on me. I’m a hip-hop guy but I appreciate good music from any genre and I been sleeping on Mariah. She’s fire. Plus, connecting with someone musically is a vibe. I like tapping into what she listens to and seeing if I like it also, even though it may not be something I’d listen to on my own (see also: The 1975). As far as new hip-hop releases, the two big ones were new albums from Vince Staples and Pusha T – and I really liked both of them. Fivio Foreign had some sick guest verses over the last year and I was intrigued by what his album would be like, but I listened to it once through and don’t plan to give it another full listen. I also feel like it’s worth noting that the Conway, Cordae, and Big K.R.I.T. albums have grown on me. Lastly, I’m on my 4th listen to the new Marian Hill album and it’s gotten better every time. 🔥

One last and very important note: THE KING IS BACK. Kendrick Lamar drops high long awaited and mega anticipated album Mr. Morale and the Big Steppas (wut) on May 13th at 9 PM PST. MARK YOUR CALENDARS AND SET YOUR ALARMS AND SIT DOWN. BE HUMBLE.

Comments: I haven’t been public about this at all, but I feel like the cat is out of the bag now: I am no longer married. I feel like the huge life change is reflected in the kind of music I wanted to listen to last month because I was definitely in my feelings – mourning the end of an important long term relationship but also excited about what the future holds. Needless to say, new music was put on the back burner in March. I was way too distracted for all that. Denzel Curry’s new album was the only new project I gave a good listen to and it was pretty good. I was super excited for Benny the Butcher’s Tana Talk 4 but if I’m being honest, it hasn’t really grabbed me. Maybe I finally have Benny fatigue? The track with J. Cole is possibly the best song of 2022 though. I’ve been using Last.FM to track my music stats for almost two years now and the most I’d ever listened to a single song was about 30 times. Last month alone, there were nine songs I listened to over 30 times! Like I said, in my feelings.

  25. KIDS SEE GHOSTS (Kanye West & Kid Cudi) – KIDS SEE GHOSTS

Comments: Not hard to see what happened here. That new Kanye West documentary on Netflix sent me down memory lane, revisiting Kanye’s entire discography. I’d actually never really spent much time with the 808s album and I can’t believe I’ve slept on it all this time. It is truly great. Truly innovative for the time. I already have some personal anthems from it. I also spent some time with Luda’s discog. I had been thinking about my top 100 or so rappers of all-time and I realized I didn’t know much about Luda. I made it through his first five albums and thought they were all good. I hit a snag on album #6 though and haven’t finished my project as my life has been kind of turned upside down recently and my focus has shifted. As far as new albums go, Saba’s album is really, really good; I’ve listened to K.R.I.T.’s album a few times and it’s different but enjoyable; Snoop’s album was completely forgettable; and EARTHGANG’s new project is brand new and a clear step down from their last one, but I’ve heard some dope songs on it.

September 2020 Music Playlist

October 1, 2020

ALBUM OF THE MONTH

Conway the MachineFrom King To A GOD

Notes: So this is mostly how I listen to music these days. Every Thursday night at 9 PM (Pacific Time), I look at all the new releases and add anything I’m interested in to my library and throw it in my Brand New and Current Rotation playlists. I used to have one playlist for newer albums, but I started leaving stuff in there for too long and it got really bloated and I wasn’t giving the newest music the attention I wanted to. Now I use the Brand New playlist for the latest music and have a strict policy of removing it after exactly one month, unless I’m really not into an album and decide to remove it earlier. My Current Rotation playlist consists of music from the last 4-6 months, with my favorite albums lingering around even longer, plus I’ve decided to start throwing older stuff on there, like artists I feel I’ve overlooked or albums I want to revisit. I probably listen to my Brand New playlist the most, but I give my Current Rotation multiple spins throughout the week and I also have a Goats Doing Goat Shit playlist of all my favorite rappers and albums and a Rappers from the Old School playlist of rappers that mostly came out in the 80s that I listen to semi-regularly. You can follow me on Apple Music @DarkKnight1717 to add any or all of my playlists.

This has created a somewhat interesting dynamic in my lists below. Half the albums on my top 20 list for September… I have never listened to all the way through. Somehow one of those albums (Jaden Smith) cracked my top 3. I have never actually listened to that album other than when a song comes up on shuffle. Numbers in parentheses are how many songs I listened to on each album or from each artist over the past month and/or the year the album was released if it didn’t come out in 2020. I spent basically all month surprised that Big Sean wasn’t getting more spins and I didn’t realize until a couple days ago that I never put his album in my Brand New playlist. Whoops. He will be in there all through October now. Also, note how high Eminem is on my top artists list despite not having any album in my top 20. I’ve started the long process of doing a profile on Eminem, in the same vein as my DMX and Notorious B.I.G. profiles. Eminem’s discography is much deeper than either of those guys, so don’t expect me to publish something anytime soon, but do expect Eminem to be near the top of my artists list until I do. As of now, I’m still on The Marshall Mathers LP. I will publish my Em album reviews as I write them though.

October 2019 New Music

November 1, 2019

I always hear people complaining about how bad music is nowadays and they couldn’t be more wrong. In fact, there is more quality music flooding the industry than ever before. It’s impossible to listen to it all, but… I try to. I give everything a chance and at the end of every month I’ll post everything I listened to and how much, what my favorite album was, what the other must have albums are, and what songs I added to my 2019 Bangers Playlist.

Stop complaining and take some guidance!

Because some albums come out later in the month and I don’t get much of a chance to listen to them before making my post, I’ve decided to make my new music posts containing all albums I’ve listened to over the last two months. New albums for the most recent month will be in bold.

Also, check out my 2019 Albums page to see where I have rated any albums I’ve formed a solid opinion on. Added this month: ratings for the new Skyzoo and Silas

October Notes: I only added six new albums from the past month (I’ll include the Halloween releases in my November post) and as you can see below, I gave very few of them strong rotation. I saw Logic, YBN Cordae and JiD in a concert last month and some dude named Silas opened the show and he was dope enough that I added his album to my rotation and enjoyed it quite a bit. Someone recommended Tuxedo and Emeli Sande to me, so I added those albums even though they dropped earlier in the year. I spent the last week of October watching the show Rhythm & Flow on Netflix, an American Idol style hip-hop contest, and D Smoke and Flawless Real Talk were my favorite contestants and they both have projects available on Apple Music that I added last month but haven’t had a chance to really listen to yet.

HEAVY ROTATION (heard whole album many times)

EARTHGANG – Mirrorland
Silas – 1998 (added in October, released in August)

SOLID ROTATION (heard whole album at least twice)

Danny Brown – uknowwhatimsayin?
Kanye West – JESUS IS KING
Skyzoo & Pete Rock – Retropolitan

COURTESY ROTATION (heard whole album)

G-Eazy – Scary Nights
Ras Kass – Soul on Ice 2
Summer Walker – Over It
Tobe Nwigwe – THREE ORIGINALS (added in October, released in March)
Wale – Wow… That’s Crazy

SKIM ROTATION (haven’t heard whole album)

Angel Olsen – All Mirrors
Emeli Sande – REAL LIFE (added in October, released in September)
Flawless Real Talk – 24Flaw7 (added in October, not sure when released)
Ghostface Killah – Ghostface Killahs
Kemba – Gilda
Kevin Gates – I’m Him
Post Malone – Hollywood’s Bleeding
Tuxedo – Tuxedo III (added in October, released in July)

Out of Rotation (removed from my current playlist)

TOO NEW (zero listens)

D Smoke – Inglewood High

ALBUM OF THE MONTH

Danny Brownuknowwhatimsayin? – This sort of wins by default. The only other new album that I listened to nearly as much was Kanye’s gospel album and I can’t even really say I liked that one. I’ve had difficulty listening to some of Danny Brown’s past work because his vocals and delivery can be… very odd and kind of grating… but on this album we get a mostly smooth and easy to understand performance. I haven’t listened to this album for at least two weeks so I find myself pretty unfamiliar with it still, but I did add “Savage Nomad” to my best tracks of 2019 playlist.

2019 Bangerz Playlist Additions

Danny Brown, “Savage Nomad”
Emeli Sande, “Free as a Bird”
Jamila Woods, “MUDDY”
Joell Ortiz ft. Big K.R.I.T., “Learn You”
Kemba, “Nobody I Can Trust”
Little Simz ft. Little Dragon, “Pressure”
Silas, “’98 Freestyle”
Silas, “Buddy (1998)”
Skyzoo & Pete Rock ft. Westside Gunn, Conway, BENNY THE BUTCHER, & Elzhi, “Eastern Conference All-Stars”
